Select Board · Meeting of May 13, 2026

Bernardston and Leyden finalize a one-year regional fire services agreement. The Select Board voted unanimously Wednesday to sign the pact, under which Leyden will pay Bernardston $65,000 for fire coverage effective July 1, with a joint advisory committee to work out lasting terms. The board also reorganized, electing Brian Herview chair, Ken Bordewick vice chair and Brian Kerby clerk, and set a June 15 special election on debt exclusion questions for a new fire engine and a Western Star dump and plow truck.

Members read town counsel Donna McNichol's finding that a standing vote at April's annual town meeting "complied with the law," after resident Michael Raymond wrote that the process undermined "a core democratic safeguard." They also approved $162,355 for a sewer project and discussed a $248,000-a-year tech school building cost.
