Bernardston special town meeting approves $76,950 refund for years of trash bag overbilling. Voters at the May 28 meeting, held at Bernardston Town Hall with just 13 registered voters present, unanimously approved transferring $76,950 from free cash to reimburse Marshall's Country Store for mispriced transfer station trash bag purchases in fiscal 2024 and fiscal 2025. Officials said the town had been charged roughly $900 a case instead of $450 for about two and a half years, a gap discovered only when a retiring store employee's bag purchase didn't add up: "something's not right," store co-owner Jesse recalled.
The town will also provide the store 59 free cases of bags this year to settle the current account. A separate article transferring $774.81 to pay a prior-year Amazon Capital Services bill also passed unanimously, clearing the nine-tenths majority required for prior-year spending.
